Feedback received

Below is the feedback I received for my magazine.

From the feedback that I received on my magazine, I found out that what attracted people to my magazine was mostly the photography. I feel that I done a good job on the photography. Overall the improvements that I could work on are the images to be the same colour. I however wanted the photography to be a mixture as I already had a strong colour scheme of 3 colours, I felt that if I included all of the images to be in colour it would cause too much of a colour clash. The changing of my masthead was a good decision. As stated above the masthead is bold and it stands out. That is what I wanted.

Final 3 pieces of magazine

 This is my final cover.
I have changed many aspects of it. First off, I added yellow to the cover as it was included in the DPS and I wanted the magazine to be consistent throughout. And I also changed the size and position of the main cover line.

This is my final contents page. I have added points of yellow to make the words that are the most important stand out.

This is my final double page spread. I have stuck to the same colour scheme of yellow, red, and white. I also sorted out the pull quote on the left hand side of the page. I made the font size a little larger so that it can be seen.

Production of DPS

First off I started by adding an image to the left hand side of the page. I also added the names of the two artist at the top of the page.
I wanted to add a pull quote because I wanted my magazine to look as professional as possible. To stay close to my colour scheme, I highlighted the most important word in yellow.
I am now adding to my magazine.
I have made the question on the DPS to be in red and the answer in white.
I have now completed my DPS and I am happy with it.

Production of Contents

I have started off my contents by adding pictures ad titles to the left hand side of the page. I want to add the writing to the right hand side as I feel that that's the side that readers will read first. I have opted for the colour scheme of yellow white and red. And a mixture of black and white images alongside full colour images.
Adding to the page.
I have now completed the Regulars and Featured section and have added a 'subscribe' information box to the bottom of the page. This is to attract more of an audience.
Adding the writing to the images. ( Goes with the images)
I have made sure I highlighted the most important words in yellow. My contents page is now complete.

Production of cover

I have started over. I have decided to create each word in a different layer on photoshop because it becomes easier for me to move the words to the position I want. I decided to change my teasers, masthead, and cover line to red. As my audience are young, I wanted a vibrant yet sophisticated colour. I felt that by changing the teasers to red and white, and creating individual layers for them it makes it look much more professional.
I have now started to add teasers to my magazine cover.
I have now added my main coverline. I have also changed the position of my main cover line I felt that previously it was too low an it should be at atleast eye level.
I changed the last teasers position a little to the left, I felt that it may look better but I have changed my mind.
I changed the teaser back to the left hand side of the page. I felt that it looked slightly out of place so I have positioned it more towards the left so it is in line with the other teasers. Also you can see that on the previous screen shot, the colour and contrast was slightly lighter. I felt that I needed to changed it and make the picture a little darker and the red to be a little darker.

I decided to add yellow to the main cover line. I feel that by doing this the most important word is highlighted. It doesn't take the whole attention away from the main cover line which is good.
I have now started to add yellow to the important words in the teasers.
This is my completed cover.

Magazine Production

This is what I have so far. I have added the masthead and have started to add the teasers on the left hand side of the magazine. I have decided to keep the masthead white as it looks better.
I have decided to change the teasers to a bolder font as they stand out more and I think that by keeping the masthead and teasers white, the attention will go more on the cover line which I want people to notice more.

Photography 2

These are the images I chose for my magazine:

I have decided to keep this image in colour as I don't want the magazine to look over dramatic and out of colour. As this image has red and yellow I have decided to put the writing on my contents pager red and yellow. I think that it fits in well with the magazine in general.

I have used another image of the models on the contents page as I need to write a page number for the Questions and Answers on the DPS.

For my contents page I decided to use 5 different images. This is one of the images I chose. This image represents a solo artist. The body language shows that he is ready for the questions being asked by Diverse Magazine. I chose to keep this image black and white as it looks better in this colour. It also fits in well with the magazines colour scheme.

I have decided to keep this image in colour as I don't want the magazine to look over dramatic and out of colour. As this image has red and yellow I have decided to put the writing on my contents pager red and yellow. I think that it fits in well with the magazine in general.

I have used a different image of the same model above. This is for another article in the magazine. This expression shows that she is ready fro the music industry. As she is a new solo artist on the scene. I wanted this to be in colour as I want the model to stand out against the white background.

To change the content of the magazine a little I wanted to add an image of a certain instrument and not a model. I took a picture of a tuning box used in changing the voice of a person when singing. This is a suitable picture as it related to music and the content of the magazine.

Lastly, I have used a different image of the two models on the cover. This image is for my cover story. It shows the two models dancing together and generally it looks like they are having a good time. In the article it will say that they both helped each other get to a higher place within the music industry. This image shows their bond as artists and I think it is one of the best images of them as it was taken when they were not aware.

Different Fonts for Masthead

Originally I had three name ideas for the masthead of my magazine.During my prezi presentation I asked my class on what masthead to use. The majority of the class chose Diverse and Volume, and picked the second font.
I then decided to stick to the name Diverse. I chose this because it represents my magazine and who it is for. I want people from all different races and ethnicities to read my magazine. It's all about diversity so I think that this masthead it suitable.

I wasn't happy with the font styles. I felt that if I chose number, it might look our of place and to in your face. So then I decided to choose a bold font that is simple and easy to read. I ended up choosing 'ARIAL' and a large font size. I have also decided to choose the colour Red. This shows a sense of seriousness and the content within this magazine is real and serious. I wanted to also create a sort of edgy look. The magazine needs to look prim and proper. Red will go well with the black and white image that I will use on the cover.

House Style

These are rough examples of what I want my front cover to look like. I have positioned everything where I would like it to be on my magazine. My magazine will follow the similar layout but it is subject to change.

This is an a rough example of what I want my contents page to look like. I am deciding whether I want to it to be a double page or a single page. But for now I have decided to stick to a single page to avoid cluttering.

This is a rough example of a DPS that I will create. I will most likely follow this as it is simple and to the point. I will like my image to be large and on the left hand side of the page with a pull quote. I would also like to include the questions and answers on the right hand side of the page.

Magazine shot examples

I searched on Google for different types of shots to see which one I preferred and what shots I wanted to use for inspiration. I looked at this image and I liked how the background was quite dark and the model looked almost golden. This is due to the reflectors being used. This made the model stand out and I think i want to use something like this for my magazine cover.
I really liked this image as it linked to my theme of magazine. I think that by keeping the image black and white it looks more effective. I think that this type of image will fit in well with the DPS. I want my dps image to be something similar to this one. With the model on the left hand side and the article on the right hand side.
I haven't yet thought about what type of cover shot I want to use but whilst searching on Google, I found this image. This image represents that Eminem is dedicated to his career. I want my model to look as if he is dedicated to music. I like that his hand is on his chest which represents his heart and that music is his life and soul. Also, he is staring straight at the camera, in other words, at the audience which create a more personal feel.
I like this image as it reflects the type of magazine I will be creating. My magazine is a r&b and hiphop magazine and the clothing worn by J.Cole in this picture is something similar to what I want my model to be wearing.

Studio Basics

In the studio there are two backdrops to choose from, either black or white. With the white backdrop, you can make it look grey.
The lights used are called Trinity Flash Lights. On the back of these flashlights are buttons. One of the test buttons will help you to decide on which flash to use, with 6 being the highest light intensity and 1 being low. When you take a picture with the camera you will hear two beeps from the Flashlights. This means that the picture has been taken.
Soft Boxes are big square boxes on stands that help to soften the light when used in a shoot. Umbrellas can also be used to soften the light but soft boxes are used more. There are fans in the soft box which help to cool down the surroundings, with these flashlights; you will not burn your hand as they will not over heat. The ‘Godox’ is a transmitter behind each soft box which is used to send signals to each of the flashlights.
On the Nikon cameras, S stands for shutter priority. This is the time in which the shutter is open. The slower the speed of the shutter, the longer it is exposed to light, which means that there will be a brighter image. This can also help to enhance features on the models face when taking a picture. Focusing more on the model than the background.
A stands for Aperture, this setting allows you to choose how big or small the lens with the camera gets. Aperture is measured in ‘f-stops’ for example, f/2.5, f/3.5
Depth of feel is when both the foreground and background are in focus. Shallow depth of feel is when the foreground is in focus and the background is not in focus.

There are two types of reflectors. The gold and the white. The gold reflector reflects a warm glow on to the models face whereas the white reflector will emit greater light. For my shoot I will be using a Nikon d7000 DSLR Camera. With these cameras you have to look through the view camera so you can see the image clearly. The model has to stand 6 foot in front of the backdrop in order for your picture to come out properly.

Proposal Video

This is my proposal video.

Evaluation:

The feedback I received from my proposal was that many people in the class agreed with my genre, and thought that I would be successful in creating a magazine of that genre. Many of the students in the class are in to the r and b and hip hop genre, so they would most likely buy it. I also carried out a vote on which masthead to use for my magazine and I came to a conclusion and have decided to choose Diverse. This is a masthead that outlines what the magazine is about and what types of people would buy the magazine. it isn't just aimed at one race, it is diverse.

Magazine Newsstand Task

Magazine Newsstand task/ distribution of magazines:

Newsstand Task:

In this specific shop, the music magazines (very few) are in the ‘men’s lifestyle’ section. They are surrounded by other magazines which are of men’s interests, such as cars for example you can see a Top Gear magazine. You can see how the publishers have taken into account how the magazines will be displayed. Most of the magazines have images of cars that dominate the page or writing which I very large and can be seen instantly.

On this specific newsstand, the magazines are places on top of each other with the first ones showing everything and NME being at the back. With the NME magazine you can only see the top third of the magazine which is the skyline, the bold masthead and a quarter of the image of the model(s).

You can see how the publishers have used the top quarter to grab the reader’s attention. Many magazine have their teasers on the left hand side of the magazine. But with these the most interesting points are on the skyline. On Kerrang!, there is a skyline about posters, on NME there is an offer for an exclusive CD; Total Guitar there is a splash and on Q there is a skyline for 3 posters, 2 of which consist of images.

The first shop I visited had a very limited selection of music magazines. I needed to visit another shop so that this research can help me when it comes to creating my own magazine.

On this newsstand which was in another shop, shows how much variation the stock of magazines can have depending on where they are sold and the specific target audience that is predicted to enter the shop. This shop was in Camden.

This clearly states that the people that enter the shop are interest in rock and indie music. The more mainstream magazines featuring upcoming artists are situated towards the middle of the stand, on the middle row and therefore leaves the end of the rows free for the less popular publications such as ‘Guitar’ which specifically focuses on one instrument opposed to generic music magazines.

Distribution of magazines:

Many costs are involved within the creating and distributing of magazines, magazines need to get from production to audience quickly and efficiently.

Publishers: Publishers produce the magazines. It would cost a lot of money for me to publish my magazine, as there would be prinitng costs and if I were to sell it to big supermarkets or shops, the places where I would seel them would want some of the profit. In the UK there are 4 main magazine publishers. EMAP Bauer who have merged together to form a bigger audience and make more profit from their magazines. NatMag, Conde Nast and IPC.
For my magazine I want to choose IPC media, this is because judging from their press pack, and looking at the audiences they do not cater for, r n b and hip hop is not included. They have has wide success with their other genres of music magazines and non music magazine and they are doing something right, that's why their magazines are being sold successfully worldwide. So to put my trust in IPC Media, I believe I will be doing the right thing.

Distribution Networks:  I have made the decision to not distribute my magazine in places in which magazines are sold. Supermarkets such as Tesco and Asda, and news stands near train stations as they are the places where their are many customers and they are most likely to pick up a magazine if it is presented to them. However, because of my audience who are mostly teenagers and people in their mid 20s, they are most likely to be on their phones a lot of the time. Therefore if there was a website in which my magazine could be uploaded, this would be a more successful method of distributing.

Sale or Return: Any copies of magazines which are not sold, and returned to the distributor, with no cost to the retailer. This is a benefit to the retailer as there is no risk or wastage involved. However, there is a wasteful and environmentally damaging system for the publisher and distributor. If no magazines are sold, this wastes the publishers/distributors time, effort, and money. So by distributing via the internet, there will be no magazines wasted as it is all an online based system.

Freemiums: This is the most popular method of distribution. These magazines are given out at stations or other busy public locations. They make all of their money through adverts which as featured within the magazine.
Alongside the distribution methods of buying from a supermarket and subscribing (which will come straight to your door) there are many other methods such as:

Electronic Subscription: this means that when you subscribe to a magazine just like the manual subscription, this will be posted straight to your inbox, your Ipad, Tablet or Kindle etc. I have decided to use this method. This way is more user friendly as every month my magazine will be in the customers inbox, without them having to physically buy a magazine. Also, I am guaranteed the money as an electronic subscription will make sure the money magazine has been payed for each month.

E-zines: these are electronic magazines.
I have come to a decision that I would like to do an e-zine. The benefits of this are that many people can access the magazine from the comfort of their own home and they can also view it 24/7 wherever they are. This also has no publishing costs as nothing needs to be printed out.

Apps: This is the most common and up to date method. An app will be an additional feature which I would consider. An app is a much easier way of people viewing my magazine and reading it as if they own an IPAD, Tablet, or an Android phone they can easily download the app and the magazine will be available on the app every month for them to read and view.

Electronic brand extension: Many magazines have now extended their brand extension to an online one. This is in the form of social networking sites such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter etc. They also extend into gigs and other events. This is to ensure that their readers are updated every step of the way, anywhere and everywhere.
I think that is is the most advanced method of extension and I would be happy to use this. By using social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, during the months that the magazine is not available users can check updates via those sites. Also, users would be encouraged to provide content to be featured in the magazine.
